Rules by degree
Some rules and regulations differ depending on the kind of degree you are studying for.
General degrees
These rules apply to all students on BSc General and MA General degree programmes:
- to complete your degree, you must gain a total of 360 credits, including:
- at least 80 credits at 2000 level
- at least 60 credits at 3000 level or higher
- credits in various subject categories as defined in the undergraduate senate regulations
- you must complete the degree requirements within the specified time limit, which depends on your mode of study
- you must gain at least 200 credits, including at least 40 at 2000 level, before you can take any 3000-level modules
Honours degrees
These rules apply to all students on Honours degree programmes (BSc, MA, MTheol, MSci, MBiol, MBiochem, MMarBiol, MChem, MMath, MPhys and MGeol):
- you must meet the Honours entry requirements
- to complete your degree, you must gain a total of 480 credits (BSc, MA, MTheol) or 600 credits (MSci, MBiol, MBiochem, MMarBiol, MChem, MMath, MPhys and MGeol), including:
- at least 80 credits at 2000 level
- credits at 3000, 4000 and 5000 level as defined in the relevant programme requirements
- you must complete the degree requirements within the specified time limit, which depends on your mode of study

Masters degrees
These rules apply to all students on taught postgraduate Masters degree programmes (MSc and MLitt):
- to complete your degree, you must gain a total of 180 credits, including:
- at least 150 credits at 5000 level, or higher as specified in the relevant programme requirements
- a dissertation or equivalent
- you must complete the degree requirements within the specified time limit, which depends on your mode of study
