Advising meeting

‌‌Advising January 2025

Advising meetings for undergraduate students joining the University in January 2025 will take place Friday 24 January 2025.

Students re-engaging after leave of absence and taught postgraduate students starting their studies in January 2025 must contact their Adviser(s) of Studies to arrange to be advised before the start of teaching on Monday 27 January 2025.

All undergraduate students in the Faculties of ArtsDivinity and Science must meet their Adviser of Studies at the beginning of each academic year (or in January if not studying in St Andrews during Semester 1).

  • Sub-honours students must meet their adviser in-person.
  • Honours students can meet with their adviser either online or in-person. Senior Honours (4th and 5th year) students who don’t have a probation status and are not returning from leave of absence or a year abroad can agree their module choices via email.

Undergraduate students in Medicine do not need to take part in the central advising process.

Attending the advising meeting is a compulsory part of the matriculation process, which must be successfully completed in order to become a registered current student. Until your module choices are approved by your Adviser of Studies at this meeting, and confirmed in the academic advising system, you are not officially enrolled in those modules.

See details of advising appointments:

  • undergraduate students
  • taught postgraduate students: see arrangements within your School
  • research postgraduate students: first-year MPhil students should check with their supervisors for advising meeting details. PhD students do not need to be advised into modules, and the Academic Advising system is not open to them. PhD students who think they will need to attend a module should liaise with their School or supervisor.

In order to get the most from your meeting with your Adviser of Studies, it is important that you have done some initial research and thinking about your module choices prior to your meeting, and submitted provisional choices during the pre-advising process. Further details of degree programmes and modules, including compulsory modules, can be found by searching or browsing the module catalogue. Additional information is also available on School web pages.

Before approving your module choices, your Adviser of Studies will:

  • check that you have selected all the compulsory modules for your degree programme
  • check that you have selected optional modules appropriate to meet other relevant academic regulations
  • check that you are qualified to take all your selected modules, and that they are available to you
  • discuss with you the amount of flexibility that you will have to switch to other degree programmes
