The university’s mental health and wellbeing strategy aims to raise awareness and reduce stigma about mental health issues, encourage supportive workplaces and participation in wellbeing activities, and enhance support available to both students and staff. Internal Support

Occupational Health

The Occupational Health Team aims to improve staff wellbeing by having a proactive approach supporting all physical and psychological wellbeing. If you are concerned that work is affecting your health or that your health his affecting your ability to undertake your role, please contact them for advice. You can either be referred by your line manager or self-refer.

Report and Support Tool

Report and Support is an online tool where staff, students and members of the community can report issues of bullying, discrimination, abuse, assault, or harassment of any sort anonymously, or by reporting with contact details so an adviser can provide support.

Mediation Service

Mediation is a confidential, impartial, and voluntary process in which trained mediators help people in dispute work out an agreement. This service is available for any staff who wants to resolve disagreement informally. Mediation is also available for groups or teams seeking a collaborative, inclusive framework for problem solving issues.

The University Chaplain is available to offer pastoral care and support for any employee, regardless of religion or belief (including non-belief). The Chaplain is also the point of contact for various spiritual and faiths issues.

Consultation Services

The Consultation Service provide confidential advice to all University Staff who work with or who encounter students with additional support needs.  

The University is committed to supporting staff and students in addressing and meeting their support needs. A key benefit of this service is that it will reduce the feeling of being alone in navigating a new situation.

Samaritans

Samaritans provides listening and support services for people in crisis and distress. The service is open 24 hours, you can call anytime about anything that’s troubling you, no matter how large or small the issue feels.

St Andrews Nightline

Nightline is a confidential, anonymous listening and information service operated by students at the University of St Andrews. 

You can contact Nightline to discuss anything and everything, their volunteers will never direct you in what to do or offer advice, but they will actively listen and be there to help you talk through things on your own terms and in your own time.

Contact them by phone, email, Skype, and IM every night. The email line is only available during summer months (June to August).

Breathing Space

This service is only available for people in Scotland.

Breathing Space is a free, confidential, phone service for anyone in Scotland over the age of 16 experiencing low mood, depression, or anxiety.

Mind

Mind is a UK charity aimed at providing advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. 

You can access their emergency advice, Infoline (an information and signposting service), Legal line (a line that provides legal information and general advice on mental health related law), and their mental health resources database.

Boloh

​​Boloh is Barnardo’s Covid-19 helpline and webchat for BAME individuals. Their helpline advisors can provide services in English, Punjabi, Mirpuri, Polish, Luganda, Ruyankole, Rukiga, Rutooro and Kinyarwanda. 

Their therapeutic sessions can be provided in the following languages: English, Gujarati, Urdu, Bengali, French, Spanish, Arabic, Punjabi, Mirpuri, Pothwari, Hinko, Hindi and Sundhi. Interpreters can be provided for other languages.

No One Can See Me Cry: Understanding Mental Health Issues for BAME Academics, Professional Staff and Students in Higher Education

No One Can See My Cry: Understanding Mental Health Issues for BAME Academics, Professional Staff and Students in Higher Education is a Zoom seminar by Dr Jason Arday, an Assistant Professor in Sociology at Durham University. The presentation examines the impact of negotiating racial inequality and discrimination at university and the impact upon mental health. Aspects examined consider the impact of belonging, victimization, isolation and marginalisation on mental health and how this consequently affects university experiences for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students and staff.

Taraki is a non-profit company that provides mental health support, resources, and awareness to Punjabi communities.

Silver Cloud is an online self-help cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) programme for students with low mood, anxiety, stress or worries about body image. This resources is provided to all employee and students and can be access via the link below:
