CEDI

The University’s Central Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (CEDI) committee is the central committee responsible for the University’s equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) remit, strategy and best practice. The committee is responsible for identifying and implementing strategies, actions and best practice with regard to all aspects of EDI.

Responsibilities

The committee responsibilities are to: 

  • Progress the University’s strategic priorities and actions related to Diverse St Andrews and the People Strategy. 
  • Lead and coordinate EDI initiatives and actions within the University that support and enhance a fair and inclusive work/study environment. 
  • Support institutional applications for external charter mark awards (e.g., Advance HE’s Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter Mark, Carer Positive Employer award, LGBT Charter, BitC Race at Work Charter). 
  • Ensure that actions related to the University’s statutory Equality Outcomes Action Plan, Mainstreaming Report and external charter mark action plans are achieved. 
  • Ensure that actions taken are aligned to the University’s Diverse St Andrews strategy and People Strategy action plan 
  • Contribute to the development of equality, diversity and inclusion training programmes for staff and students. 
  • Provide regular updates to the Vice-Principal Governance on equality, diversity and inclusion activities and initiatives within the University. 
  • Communicate progress on equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives to the University community, and signpost staff and students to relevant policy and practice developments.

  • Central equality, diversity and inclusion team – Head of Equality & Diversity; Head of Wellbeing and Mediation; Equality and Diversity Awards Advisors; Project Manager in Equalities; EDI Assistant
  • Unit/Professional Service staff representatives – EDI Unit Reps Network co-chairs
  • Equality award leads: Athena Swan (AS) Lead; Race, Ethnicity, Religion and Belief Group (RERBG)/Race Equality Charter (REC) Lead
  • Student representatives – Students’ Association (SA) Director of Wellbeing; two additional student representatives from the SA’s Equal Opportunity Committee
  • Student services representatives – Director of Student Services; Assistant Director of Student Services (Accessibility and Inclusion)
  • Education and Student Experience and Principal’s Office representatives – Director of Student Experience; Director of Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development (CEED) (or nominated representative); Director of Organisational and Staff Development Services (OSDS) (or nominated representative); Community Engagement and Social Responsibility Officer
  • Human resources and planning representatives – Director of Human Resources (HR); Deputy Director of HR; Planning Officer

Roles and Responsibilities

Chair: 

  • Provides overall direction and leadership for the group’s activities and remit 
  • Engages and gains senior management approval (Principal, VP’s, Court) for relevant activity 
  • Chairs CEDI meetings  

Members of the EDI team have the following responsibilities: 

  • Report on and oversight for EDI commitments, e.g., School Athena Swan applications  
  • Report and feedback regarding ongoing initiatives 

Members representing Schools/Units have the following responsibilities: 

  • Representing the views of Schools/Units, EDI Directors and Professional Services staff 
  • Receiving and disseminating feedback and best practice to and from Schools/Units 

Members representing students or student-related services have the following responsibilities: 

  • Representing the views of students across the institution 
  • Providing high level information and guidance about initiatives for students 

Central representatives have the following responsibilities: 

  • Providing robust data to form the evidence base for EDI initiatives 
  • Ensuring that the proposed EDI initiatives are legally compliant and in keeping with current University guidance and policies 
  • Ensuring that there is congruency with other strategic forums, e.g., Education, Strategy Management Group (ESMG) and the Academic Management Group (AMG)
