Modern Language year abroad placements
There are a variety of options available to students in the School of Modern Languages who wish to undertake a work placement in a country where Arabic, Chinese Studies, French, German, Italian or Spanish is spoken. Working abroad as an integrated year of the degree programme is an enriching opportunity to enhance language study and employment prospects.
Key information:
- Potential participation is determined during the second year of study, irrespective of the initial declaration on the UCAS application.
- The placement year constitutes the third year of a five-year programme – ‘with integrated year abroad’ (WIYA).
- Placements are not guaranteed and are competitive.
- These programmes are subject to gaining Honours entry.
- Joint Honours students must seek approval from the Head of School in the other subject.
- 60 credit year (of 540), instead of the four-year non-WIYA degree, which requires 480 credits.
For full details of the programme and options depending on specific degree programmes please consult relevant School of Modern Languages web pages, plus Departmental web pages.
Language assistantships are a very popular year abroad option. Alternatively, some students organise and undertake an independent work placement, subject to School permission.
