Tuition fees

The University of St Andrews operates a credits-based tuition fee policy which is consistent across all programmes and cohorts and therefore also applies to students studying or working abroad. 

It is your responsibility to ensure that you inform your funding body of your intention to go abroad. Please be aware that your funding body may not provide a tuition fee grant for full tuition fees. Whether or not you receive, or indeed are entitled to receive, funding support for tuition fees is a matter for you and the relevant funding body.

Tuition fees for study abroad students

If you participate in an undergraduate Study Abroad programme you will be charged your normal tuition fee for a full academic year, whether you spend a full year abroad or one semester in St Andrews and one semester abroad.

Funding information

  • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and are spending either the full academic year abroad or one semester abroad, a full tuition fee grant is available from SAAS.
  • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Loans Company (SLC) and are spending the full academic year abroad, a half tuition fee loan is available from SLC.
  • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Loans Company (SLC)and are spending one semester abroad and one semester in St Andrews, a full tuition fee loan is available from SLC.

Tuition fees for Modern Language WIYA students

If you participate in a 60 credit Modern Languages WIYA (Integrated Year Abroad) programme you will be charged half your normal tuition fee for the academic year.  If you intend to spend the full year abroad on a Russian language WIYA programme offered through Russian Language Undergraduate Studies (RLUS), you will be charged a half tuition fee by the University of St Andrews. You will also be liable for RLUS fees.

Funding information 

    • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Loans Company (SLC) and are undertaking a full integrated year abroad, a half tuition fee loan is available from SLC.
    • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and are undertaking a full integrated year abroad, a half tuition fee grant is available from SAAS. 

 

Tuition fees for external placement students (Biology and Chemistry only)

If you participate in a Biology or Chemistry External Placement programme, you will be charged your normal tuition fee for a full academic year.

Funding information 

  • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Loans Company (SLC) and are undertaking a full year placement, a half tuition fee loan is available from SLC.. Please also note you may only be entitled to a reduced maintenance loan while undertaking a work placement. 
  • If you apply for tuition fees from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and are undertaking a full year placement, a half tuition fee grant is available from SAAS.  

Russian language undergraduate studies (RLUS)

If you participate in an RLUS Programme for one semester, you will be charged half your normal fee for that semester and full fee for your other semester. You will also be liable for RLUS fees for the semester you spend in Estonia or Kazakhstan.

Global Office Tuition Fee Support Scholarship

SLC funded students studying or working abroad or in the UK for the full academic year are entitled to a half tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC).  SAAS funded students undertaking an industrial placement in Biology or Chemistry are entitled to a half tuition fee grant. 

The University of St Andrews is committed to supporting and enhancing study and work abroad opportunities for all students. In the context of current funding restrictions, students within these categories are eligible to apply to the University for a needs-based tuition fee scholarship to a maximum of £4,500.

Eligible students will be contacted directly by the Global Office in late March, inviting them to apply for the scholarship.  The scholarship is not yet open for the academic year 2026-2027.   

Making your online application

  • To apply, log into your MySaint account and click through to eVision.
  • On the ‘Scholarships and Funding’ tab, click on ‘View Scholarships and Funding Catalogue’ 
  • This takes you to a search page, just click on the ‘refresh list’ button which will bring up a search box at the bottom of the page.
  • Put ‘Global Office Tuition Fee Support Scholarship’ in the search box and click ‘next’.  Details of the RUK Scholarship will come up in your search results listed below. Please ensure that you search under the academic year 2026-2027.
  • Click ‘apply’ in the actions column.
  • Deadline: 30 April 2026.

At the bottom of the page you will be asked to ‘Start Application’ – please complete each of the boxes.

You do not need to complete these steps in order and you can save your application and return at any time.

As part of the application, you will be asked to upload a short personal statement outlining your reasons for applying for the Scholarship. You should also provide a recent bank statement as indicated on the application form. 

When completing the financial information section of the application, please note that:

  • You should provide your student loan payments as a yearly amount;
  • You should provide your gross household income (before tax).

Tuition fees for SLC funded (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) students on full year study and work placements in receipt of funding from the Turing programmes in the academic year 2025-2026

SLC funded students participating in a study or work abroad programme for the full academic year through the Turing programmes are eligible for tuition fee funding in addition to monthly mobility funding. The effect of this additional funding is that your personal tuition fee liability will be reduced to £1430.  Please note that the reduced tuition fee is applicable only if you participate in the full year placement – if you are undertaking two separate study or work abroad placements over the year, it is important that you complete each of them to retain eligibility for this, and if you participate in a full-year placement, this must be of a minimum seven-month duration. Withdrawal from or shortening of your placement activity will affect your eligibility.

It is your responsibility to inform your funding body that you will be in receipt of Turing funding.
