Top Tips for Energy Saving
Simply follow the energy saving tips below to help minimise wasteful use of energy in your home every day:
Top Tips
Switch off lights in empty rooms and close curtains at dusk
Turn electrical appliances off rather than leaving them on standby
Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need each time you boil it
Cook with lids on pans and match ring size to saucepan size
Avoid placing furniture in front of radiators
Wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine and use a lower washing temperature (between 30 -40oC)
Use a shower instead of a bath when possible
Tumble dryers cost a lot to run – dry clothes outside or on a clothes rail for free
Switch your appliances (such as televisions and microwaves) off rather than leaving them on standby. This will save money and energy and help you to Act On CO2
Keep your diet as varied as possible; include plenty of hot food and drinks
Make sure you wear lots of thin layers - this helps to trap body heat and dress in clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres
Heating your Home
Set thermostats correctly;
- During the day set the thermostat to 21°C (70°F), and during the night set it to 18°C (64°F).
- Hot water thermostats at around 60 – 65oC
Set your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you've gone to bed. If it's very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up.
If you can't heat all of the rooms you use, heat the living room throughout the day and your bedroom(s) just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most.
Heating your home safely is really important. Remember to get your heating system checked regularly, if you are renting privately this is your Landlord's responsibility. Keep your home well ventilated.
