Dr Fiona Whelan

Assistant Director [Accessibility and Inclusion]

Fiona recently joined Student Services in 2020. She has a background in academic research and teaching, coupled with experience working in and managing student support services.

Fiona has a doctorate in medieval history (and is still publishing bits and pieces if medieval history is your thing!) and has experience teaching in the tutorial system at the University of Oxford. However, her primary focus and interest is on student support and improving the student experience.

She joined St Andrews from Queen Mary University of London where she was the Student Academic and Pastoral Support Manager for Barts and the London Medical School. Prior to that, she was based in student welfare at the University of Oxford where she worked on projects such as tackling gender based violence and inclusive teaching practice.

She has a passion for supporting students to thrive at university and ensuring that all students can access the opportunities that Higher Education provides.
