Extension of Time Limit (PG Research Students)
What is an extension?
You may find that you require extra time to complete your thesis. If you realise that you will not submit within the time limit, it is very important that you acknowledge this as early as possible and take advice from your supervisor. An extension may then be granted by the Associate Provost (Students).
An extension is not the same as a leave of absence as you are expected to work on your thesis. An extension also incurs a fee and is granted quarterly. You may apply for one quarter initially or multiple quarters.
The standard time periods for an extension are:
- 3, 6, 9 or 12 months for a PhD
- 3, 6 months for an MPhil
- 3 months for a MSc (Res)/MSt (Res)
For further information, please see Length of Study and Associated Fees for PG Research Students
Please contact the Registry Officer (reg-support-pgr@st-andrews.ac.uk) to discuss your options and their implications.
How do I request an extension?
You should always discuss your extension request with your supervisor in the first instance. Once you have the support from your supervisor, you can apply for an extension using the online form in MMS.
Please note, your extension request will first need to be approved by your Director of Postgraduate Studies via mms. Registry Support Officer and the Associate Provost (Students) will then be notified. If approved by the Associate Provost (Students), Registry will send you confirmation.
An extension will begin the day after your current expected end date, and you will be contacted at your registration anniversary in order to matriculate, at which point you will be expected to pay the appropriate extension fees.
Important points to note:
An extension may have implications for any funding you have, and may not be permitted under some circumstances. If you are funded, please do check with your funder if this is permissible under their terms and conditions.
If you are an overseas student on a Student visa, an extension to your time limit may have implications for your immigration status. Please seek advice from the International Student Adviser (advint@st-andrews.ac.uk).
The Students' Association has an Education Advocate who is able to advise further if you have a problem in the University.
