7. Downloading Submissions

Introduction

If the assignment has been setup for electronic submission or for Turnitin Submission, then students are able to upload an electronic copy of their submission to an assignment. After the due date staff are then able to download a copy of these submissions. This chapter will cover the main methods of downloading student submissions:

As with all chapters in this guide, sections labelled 'advanced' will extend your knowledge of the system but are not essential

Downloading individual submissions

On both the Assignment Overview and the Concise mark entry page electronic submissions are represented by icons in the 'File' column (see Figure 7.2). The exact icon will depend on the file type of the submission (some examples are given in Figure 7.1).

Clicking on the file icon will open a new window which will give you the option of opening a file, or saving it.

Turnitin note: It may take a few hours after students have submitted to Turnitin before the file becomes visible in MMS.

Bulk download of submissions (advanced)

In the coursework tool you can bulk download all submissions for an assignment by clicking one of the three options available above the assignment table (see Figure 7.2) The three options for bulk download are:

  • Zip — This option will produce a zip folder containing each individual essay. It will also name each file with the matric number and assignment name.
  • PDF — This option gathers all the submitted PDF's and uses them to produce a single PDF. Each submission will have a cover sheet containing student matric number, module code, module name, tutor (if known), assignment name and the date submitted. This is useful if you wish to print of paper copies as it produces a single file for printing but it is less useful if students haven't submitted PDF's.
  • Zip and coverpages — This will produce a zip folder in much the same way the 'Zip' option does but attaches a cover sheet to each submission containing student matric number, module code, module name, tutor (if known), assignment name and the date submitted

These options are available on both the Assignment Overview and the Concise mark entry pages, just above the table.
